The song’s recitative is a compilation of excerpts from the old Czech prose piece called Tkadleček (The Weaver), which ranks among the distinctive dominants of Czech medieval literature. The estimated time of the composition’s date of appearance is sometime after 1400.

The plot resolves around the Weaver, a young lover, who accuses the Misfortune of having caused the infidelity of the protagonist’s beloved, Adlička. The quarrel between the two becomes gradually more and more revolving around common panhuman topics until it gets to such issues as the purpose of evil in the world, the question where evil comes from, or the extent to which man can determine his own destiny.

In terms of artistic and linguistic richness, Tkadleček is of a high standard and matches the stylistic sophistication of the demanding Latin prose of that time. The form used here is that of a dispute, which, however, is more in the nature of a philosophical debate on philosophical and theological problems. The identity of the author, who must have been an educated person familiar with the ancient classics and the ecclesiastical authorities of the Middle Ages, as well as versed in the Bible, is unknown.
